COMMENTS ON THE DISC
I am a travelling Resource
Consultant working with children, ages 2-5, with special
needs. I develop Individual Program Plans, complete home
and school visits and administer a screen, which is the
DISC.
I have been using the DISC for
the past 5 years and have found it to be reliable in
identifying possible and probable delays across the
various areas of development.
I use the DISC for five
purposes:
- To screen children whom
preschool teachers and parents are worried about
their development.
- To screen children to
determine their eligibility for our resource
program. Our program requires a child have two or
more areas of probable delays.
- To screen children who are
otherwise considered untestable in formal
assessment environment. Psychometrist now request
I complete the DISC as it gives them valuable
information about the child's level of
functioning.
- I feel the DISC gives
valuable accurate information about what the
child's areas of strengths and needs are and
gives me a focus from which to develop an
appropriate I.P.P. From the DISC summary results
I write a report which summarizes the child's
performance on the DISC and write activity
suggestions to further enhance the child's
development.
- I also use the DISC results
to determine if further formal assessment is
needed e.g. if fine motor scored a probable delay
then I will refer the child for an Occupational
Therapy assessment if expressive language and
receptive language scored a "D" then
the child is referred to a Speech Language
Pathologist for a formal speech and language
assessment. If most areas are scoring a probable
delay then I will refer the child for a full
developmental assessment.
I find the DISC results to be
accurate as formal testing has confirmed many times that
developmental delays are present in areas identified by
the DISC.
